Foreign exchange services to return to regional New Zealand through a trusted retail network

Travelex, a leading foreign exchange company, and Paper Plus, are proud to announce their new national partnership, enabling participating Paper Plus stores to offer trusted currency exchange services to communities across Aotearoa - particularly in those areas no longer serviced by banks.

With more than 80 stores nationwide, Paper Plus has been serving New Zealand communities for over 40 years. As a cooperative of independently owned and operated local businesses, each store is deeply embedded in its community – making this partnership a natural extension of that longstanding commitment to local service.

This initiative represents a practical response to the changing service landscape, stepping in to meet essential needs as traditional providers continue to retreat from both regional towns and urban centres.

For Travelex, the partnership extends its national footprint and supports its commitment to making travel money more accessible to customers, beyond traditional airport and tourist locations.

Paper Plus, Chief Executive Officer, Carrie Welch said: “As other services and businesses move away from smaller local communities, we see an opportunity to step up and make a meaningful difference. Our independently owned and operated stores care deeply about their communities, and this partnership helps keep important services local and accessible.”

Participating Paper Plus stores will offer selected foreign exchange services under the Travelex brand. Over 40 currencies will be available for purchase both over the counter at select Paper Plus stores as well as online via the Travelex and Paper Plus websites for collection at participating stores.

“This initiative reflects the strength and reach of our network,” Welch adds. “Through our cooperative model, we deliver meaningful customer value while supporting the long-term success of our independently owned and operated stores. Importantly, our stores continue to serve as trusted destinations within their communities – places people can go for both service and connection.”

The programme is currently in its engagement phase, with store onboarding to take place in the coming months. Paper Plus and Travelex plan to have all participating stores active for its customers from May 2026.

Asokan Sathurayar, ANZ Managing Director at Travelex said: “Travelex has specialised in foreign exchange money solutions for 50 years and our mission is to ensure our customers have convenient access to travel money, however and whenever. We’re delighted to be partnering with Paper Plus to facilitate greater access to travel money for communities across New Zealand and we recognise the urgent need to support regional communities.”
