Reopening follows AU$485 million redevelopment of Melbourne retail destination as outbound Australian travel surges

Travelex has relaunched its store in Chadstone Shopping Centre, Australia’s largest shopping and lifestyle destination, attracting more than 400,000 visitors a year.

Chadstone, located in Australia’s fashion capital Melbourne, is the largest shopping centre in the Southern Hemisphere and is home to over 500 local and international brands. Travelex first opened at Chadstone, in 2008, with the newly relaunched store forming part of a broader AU$485 million redevelopment and expansion of the retail destination.

Located in the renovated Market Pavilion, the store enables customers to conveniently purchase or pick up pre-ordered travel money in over 50 different currencies, as well as use an ATM to obtain US Dollars, Euros, Japanese Yen and Indonesian Rupiah. Travellers can also top up their Travelex pre-paid Travel Money Card (TMC) at the store, which features a new modern design in line with the Chadstone’s premium retail experience.

“Our new Chadstone store offers unparalleled pre-trip convenience at one of the world’s most iconic retail destinations,” said Dominic Mesiti, Head of Corporate Partnerships at Travelex ANZ. “We’re excited to form part of Chadstone’s wider redevelopment and to provide our customers with a premium experience.”

The relaunch of the Chadstone store comes as Australia’s outbound travel market continues to surge, with ATIA reporting a 16% increase in international trips by Australians in 2024. This includes a 57% increase in trips to Japan and a 23% increase in trips to Indonesia. Last year Australians also took 12% more short-term trips abroad – a 56% increase on pre-pandemic levels.

“Outbound travel is absolutely booming, and we know Aussies like to spend via both cash and card when they go abroad. Increasingly, we’re seeing travellers also like to acquire travel money in advance of their trip and our new store is conveniently located for those last minute pre-trip errands,” added Mesiti.

Travelex opened 18 new stores and kiosks across Australia in 2024, including in prime locations in Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra.

“Chadstone really is so much more than a shopping destination – it’s a lifestyle destination and a cultural hub, for Melbournians, Australians, and tourists from far and wide. The Market Pavilion is a celebration of quality, craftsmanship and the rich food culture that makes our city unique. We’re proud to have over 50 market-leading retailers across the 26,500 square metres,” said Daniel Boyle, Chadstone Centre Manager.
